The Sheet Tracer is a tape-shaped 3D measurement device. It is a system for measuring and analyzing the deformation of flexible objects such as car seats and beds in three-dimensional coordinates.

In conventional 3D measurement devices and motion capture systems, it was impossible to measure the deformation shape and three-dimensional coordinates of parts that are sandwiched by flexible materials because they cannot be observed from the outside.

In this system, a tape-shaped sensor with IMUs (Inertial Measurement Units) placed at 20mm intervals is used. By applying IMU’s attitude angle calculations, it is possible to measure the internal deformation of the sandwiched parts. For example, it allows for the measurement and analysis of the deformation of cushions that occur when someone sits on a seat over time.

This technology makes it possible to obtain data that could not be quantified before, such as seat comfort, cushion deformation, and more. It is also applied to assessing the cushioning properties of beds, furniture, and ease of turning in bed.

This system has applications ranging from evaluating the operability (riding comfort) in driving simulations to measuring the shapes of beds and pillows in design.

Features

A measurement device leveraging the characteristics of flexible printed circuit boards.

Inertial sensors are placed at 20mm intervals on a flexible printed circuit board.
It is also possible to draw smooth curves by taking advantage of its flexibility.
About load capacity
By reinforcing the area around the inertial sensor chip on the flexible substrate, it is made to be less prone to failure while remaining flexible.

40 inertial sensors are arranged in one line at 20mm intervals.
